A detailed comparison of the GTA 6 map (Leonida) versus the GTA 5 map (Los Santos and Blaine County). How much bigger is GTA 6, and what does the expanded map mean for gameplay?
One of the most talked-about aspects of GTA 6 is the size of its map. Leonida, the fictional state where the game takes place, is the largest map Rockstar has ever created. But how does it compare to GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County?
GTA 5 featured a map of approximately 75 square kilometers, combining the city of Los Santos with the surrounding Blaine County. This was already one of the largest open-world maps in gaming when it released in 2013. The map included:
The GTA 5 map was impressive for its time, but it was essentially one city and one surrounding rural area. The diversity of environments was limited compared to what GTA 6 is promising.
GTA 6 replaces the single-city format with an entire state. Leonida is inspired by Florida and features six counties, each with its own distinct environment:
While Rockstar has not released official square kilometer measurements, the six-county structure of Leonida suggests a map that is significantly larger than GTA 5's. Each county appears to be roughly the size of a distinct region, meaning the total playable area could be several times larger than Los Santos and Blaine County combined.
This is where GTA 6 truly separates itself from GTA 5. Where GTA 5 had a city, a desert, and some mountains, GTA 6 offers six fully realized environments ranging from dense urban cityscapes to tropical wetlands to rural farmland. The environmental diversity means more varied gameplay opportunities.
GTA 6 places a much greater emphasis on water environments. The Leonida Keys, the wetlands of Kelly County, and the coastal areas of Vice City all suggest significant water-based gameplay. GTA 5 had an ocean but limited water-based content. GTA 6 appears to make water a core part of the experience.
Trailer footage confirms that GTA 6 will feature living wildlife, including alligators, flamingos, and various bird species. GTA 5 had some wildlife in Blaine County, but GTA 6 appears to make it a more integral part of the world.
The expanded map size and diversity suggest that GTA 6 will offer more varied gameplay than any previous entry:
