The complete guide to everything confirmed about GTA 6: release date, platforms, setting, protagonists, story, gameplay, vehicles, weapons, map, and more. Sourced from official trailers and Rockstar press releases.

GTA 6: Everything We Know

Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of the decade. After 13 years since GTA V, Rockstar Games has released two trailers and official press materials that reveal a significant amount about the game. This guide compiles every confirmed detail into one place, with no rumors or speculation.

Last updated: September 2026. Sources: Rockstar Games Trailer 1 (Dec 2023), Trailer 2 (May 2025), official press releases.

Release Date and Platforms

GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This date was confirmed in Trailer 2, released May 6, 2025.

No PC version has been announced for launch. Based on Rockstar's history, a PC release is likely to follow 12 to 18 months later, but this is not confirmed. GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 and came to PC in 2015.

Setting: The State of Leonida

GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida. Leonida is the largest map Rockstar has ever built. It includes Vice City as the primary urban center, reimagined from GTA: Vice City with modern art deco architecture, beachfront boulevards, and neon-lit nightlife. Port Gellhorn is a rural, rundown town shown in Trailer 2. The Leonida Keys are a chain of tropical islands inspired by the Florida Keys. Grassrivers is a wetlands area inspired by the Everglades, with airboats and alligators. Mount Kalaga is a wilderness area.

Leonida is divided into six counties: Vice-Dale, Kelly, Leonard, Mariana, Ambrosia, and Lummox.

Protagonists: Lucia and Jason

GTA 6 features two protagonists, a first for the series in terms of the narrative dynamic. Lucia is the first female lead in a mainline GTA game. Trailer 2 shows her being released from a correctional facility, suggesting her criminal record is part of the story setup. Jason is Lucia's partner. They are described as a criminal couple, drawing on the Bonnie and Clyde archetype.

Their relationship is central to the story. Trailer 2 shows domestic scenes alongside heist footage, suggesting the narrative balances their personal life with criminal activity.

See our Lucia character profile and Jason character profile for details.

Story and Themes

The story follows Lucia and Jason as they attempt to build a life together while committing crimes across Leonida. Themes visible in the trailers include the struggle to escape a criminal past, economic disparity contrasting Vice City's wealth with Port Gellhorn's poverty, social media culture and its impact on crime and celebrity, and law enforcement and the consequences of crime.

The narrative tone appears to blend GTA's signature satire with a more personal, character-driven story than previous entries.

Gameplay Mechanics

Combat and Weapons

Trailer 2 shows weapon switching, aiming, and shootouts. Confirmed weapon types include pistols, shotguns, and assault rifles. See our weapons database and weapon damage rankings.

Driving and Vehicles

Driving physics appear significantly improved over GTA V. Cars have weight and momentum. Multiple vehicle types are confirmed: sports cars, muscle cars, motorcycles, boats, airboats, and trucks. See our vehicle database, fastest cars ranking, and most expensive vehicles.

Swimming and Water

Swimming is confirmed. Given Leonida's extensive coastline, waterways, and islands, water-based gameplay is a major feature. Airboats are shown navigating the Grassrivers wetlands.

Robbery and Heists

A convenience store robbery is shown in detail in Trailer 2. Robbery appears to be a core gameplay loop, not just mission content. See our confirmed missions list.

Social Media and Phone

The in-game phone and social media system returns from GTA V, expanded. Characters film on phones, and social media clips serve as both narrative devices and gameplay elements.

Wildlife

Alligators, flamingos, and other wildlife are shown. The ecosystem appears to be living, with animals interacting with the environment and potentially with the player.

Map and World

Leonida is confirmed to be the largest map in Rockstar's history. It spans six counties with distinct environments, including the dense urban sprawl of Vice City, the rural decay of Port Gellhorn, the wetlands of Grassrivers, the tropical islands of the Leonida Keys, beaches and coastlines, and the wilderness of Mount Kalaga.
